About EAN-13
EAN-13 is the most common barcode in the world, found on virtually every product in European retail. The code consists of 13 digits: a GS1 country prefix, a company number, an item number and a final check digit that is calculated automatically.
To sell in stores you need valid GTIN numbers licensed from GS1. The prefix shows where the company is GS1-registered, not where the product was made.

Frequently asked questions
Where do I get a valid EAN-13 number?
From GS1 in your country. You license a company prefix and create your own item numbers under it. Making up your own numbers does not work in retail β collisions are caught by POS systems and marketplaces.
How large must the code be in print?
Nominal size is 37.29 Γ 25.93 mm (100%). GS1 allows 80β200% scaling. Never print below 80% if the code will be scanned at a checkout.
What is Bar Width Reduction (BWR) and do I need it?
On press, ink spreads slightly and makes bars wider than in the file. BWR compensates by drawing the bars narrower in advance. Ask your printer for the recommended value β 10β40 ΞΌm is common for offset.
