About UPC-E

UPC-E is a zero-suppressed form of UPC-A: zeros in the number are compressed away so the code becomes roughly half as wide. Only UPC-A numbers with a specific zero pattern can be compressed.

Used for

  • Small packages on the North American market

Frequently asked questions

Why can my number not be turned into a UPC-E?

Only UPC-A numbers with zeros in the right positions can be compressed. If your number has the wrong pattern there is no UPC-E form — use UPC-A or EAN-13.
