About ITF-14
ITF-14 carries a GTIN-14 (packaging-level GTIN) and is used on outer cases. The Interleaved 2 of 5 technology has wide, sparse bars that survive direct printing on corrugated board — hence the characteristic bearer bars that prevent misreads at poor print quality.
The first digit is a packaging indicator (1–8) followed by the product GTIN without its check digit, plus a new check digit.

Frequently asked questions
What does the first digit of a GTIN-14 mean?
The packaging indicator: the same product in different case sizes gets different indicators (1–8). 9 is reserved for variable-measure goods.
Does ITF-14 need a frame around it?
For direct print on corrugated board: yes, bearer bars are required by GS1 to protect against misreads. For label printing, horizontal bearer bars are sufficient.
